Happy Book Birthday… To ME! (and BroodingYAHero)

Well, here it is. The morning of my book birthday, and the day I give BroodingYAhero’s story over to you, the readers.

I’m so thrilled and truth be told, utterly nervous.

Everyone dreams of being an author. I certainly have since I was five. Now that I am SO close to being once (at the time of writing this) I think, it feels different every single day. Some days I catch myself just gazing dreamily at my book, my REAL book, on my bookshelf. Other days, I get hit with the “oh, if only I had done this and this and this instead…” bug. Other other days, I hear from a reader or friend that they liked it, and I swear I’m floating. Still other days, I consider running away and hiding in some cave in Scotland, away from all these writerly thoughts.

Most days, though, I am so happy to be an Author, and to share this odd, wonderful novel with you, the reader. BroodyBook isn’t like any other book, and I think Brooding YA Hero wouldn’t have it any other way.

tumblr_njry84q0h51rjlbhvo1_1280.png

This adventure has had a lot of ups and downs, but I’m so utterly glad to share it with you. BroodingYAHero was started to make friends smile, and I think, if the legacy of the book featuring our Broody hero is to make even more people smile, well, that is a legacy I can be proud of. I am just so so amazed my dream is finally here.

I am an Author.

Thank you so much to every single person who preordered, requested from the library, recommended, reviewed, and tweeted. You are amazing.

I’d like to take one minute to personally thank Linnea Gear, the illustrator of this book. Her beautiful art made this story come alive, and I’m utterly thrilled to work with her. You can check out her other work here: link to portfolio and here: link to DISSENT, her webcomic.

Why library preorders matter

One of my favorite books of all time, Lirael by Garth Nix, features the most incredible library in any universe, complete with books, magic, and monsters. I loved that library, in part because it represented all of the libraries that I adored. From my cozy middle-school library to the sprawling quiet of my university library, a great deal of my life has been spent among the shelves of books.

If it wasn’t for libraries, I certainly wouldn’t have been able to enjoy nearly as many stories as I have over the years. Libraries provide books, education, and so much more to everyone.

Everyone deserves access to wonderful books.

That’s why my preorder prizes are available to you if you request your book from a library, just like if you order it!

Additionally, you’ll be eligible for a very special library-preorder prize only! (pictures to come)

Brooding YA Hero: Becoming a Main Character (Almost) as Awesome as Me

Hi!
Broody here. I’ve stolen Carrie’s blog, (as well as all of your hearts) to share some exciting news.

My cover has been revealed! Check it out over on Bustle.com! The amazing author Zoraida Córdova interviewed Carrie (although she let me sneak in a few lines, which is nice)

A little about my cover. You might notice I look slightly different from my Twitter photo. That’s all right. I change appearances as the plot demands, and this book demanded a little more leather-jacket swagger. However, the art for both is done by the talented Linnea Gear! Linnea also has an amazing webcomic, DISSENT, which you all should read.

Did you look at my cover yet???

Okay.
Fine. Maybe you don’t want to click on the link to the cover.

If that’s the case, keep scrolling.

Tada!

As his nefarious ex, Blondie DeMeani, attempts to thwart him at every turn, Broody writes the best book ever on main character status.

Pretty handsome, huh?

I SOLD A BOOK! (#BroodyBook)

This is the blog post every writer dreams of writing. I SOLD A BOOK! Follow this blog, and Broody’s Twitter, for more news. This book is a loving parody of the YA genre, narrated by the BroodingYAhero himself. There will be quizzes, games, and a wonderfully Broody storyline.

And add it on Goodreads here! LINK

A quick story:
I was presenting at YALSA, which was an incredible conference, in which I met many incredible authors and librarians!  I spoke on social media on that Friday, and had the time of my life. Saturday, I got an email from my agent.

We had an offer on BROODING YA HERO’S GUIDE TO ACHIEVING MAIN CHARACTER STATUS from Skpony Press.

I celebrated, cheered…
And then the election happened.
It was very strange to feel both overwhelming joy and hope, and utter, heart-crushing grief. (Hence the long delay on writing this blog post.)  But,  I do think it’s important to celebrate small good things, even in the dark days.

So, now it’s time to celebrate. In the comments, I’d love to hear about a small good thing you’re celebrating!

33799449

Here’s the part where I get a little bit motivational. If you told me when I was young, or even a year ago, that my first book would be a YA parody, I would have… been very confused. I learned two things.

First of all, it’s very hard to claim that you’re funny. Seriously. If you don’t believe me, turn to the person nearest you, and say “I’m very funny.”

They will almost always reply, “well, say something funny then. Make me laugh.”

Haaaa. Good. Not like there’s any pressure now, right? But hey, once you get used to being considered at least slightly funny, it’s not all bad. (If my friends don’t laugh at my jokes, I can now say 37,000 people on the internet find me funny)

Secondly, I was quite sure, for the longest time, that I was born to take up the mantle of Tolkien and write sweeping fantasy epics.

I had no idea I’d write a YA parody for my first novel instead.

So, my tiny little motivational speech is to… be open to new ideas. Don’t assume you know what your first published book will be. Don’t be afraid of trying new ideas.

And above all, always be Broody.

Or at least, a main character 😉

Brooding YA Hero’s Tips to Become a Main Character

This is a guest post by  Broody McHottiepants, aka @broodingYAhero on twitter.

So. Summer’s half over, right? And you’re stressing because you’re not sure if you’re a main character? Don’t worry. I’m here for you. (Literately. I’m always around when you need me. Except in Chapter 23. I had to skip that one.)

Anyways, here’s a list of the top seven ways you can achieve main character status before school starts up again. Not in school because your dystopian society has forced to you duel love interests to the death instead? Or maybe you’re an immortal assassin who’s too busy uncovering conspiracies about love interests to go to school? That’s okay, these tips still can help.

Broody, himself

BROODY’S 7 TIPS TO BECOME A MAIN CHARACTER BY THE END OF SUMMER

1.  Move. To England. Or a remote small town in America.  Or Canada. Or New York City. Or out of your room. Preferably somewhere you won’t have to waste time learning a new language. That gives you more time to reinvent yourself.

2. Get a hobby. The quirkier the better. Goat racing! Plastic bag knitting! Celery painting! This unique skill will certainly lead you towards other quirky characters, and a plot will form around you.

3. Get a destiny/curse/prophecy. These are a little harder to find nowadays, but a good destiny bestowed upon you by a well-meaning magical old lady (or a ominous prophecy from a vengeful Greek god) will grant you main character status every time.

4. Find a place to volunteer. This will let you learn an important lesson about that one character flaw you seem to have, and you’ll emerge at the end of the summer a better person. Also has a high chance of granting you a love interest, should you desire one.

5. Find a magical portal. Check in decrepit buildings, all mirrors, behind ornately carved bookshelves. Inspect all old jewelry, from stuff acquired at a garage sale all the way up to family heirlooms. Maybe do some dusting in the process. You’ll stumble into a gateway to a magical land before long.

6. Roadtrip! Need I say more?

7. Fall in love. This is a risky one. Summer romances don’t always grant you permanent main character status. Better to cross paths with a mysterious stranger, who will just happen to be enrolling in your school that fall. Proceed with caution, least you stumble into a Grease remake.

Alright then. You’ve got the advice. Now, excuse me, I have an old car I have to go work on, while blasting classic rock, and brooding about how no one will ever understand me. Very time consuming. Best of luck. You’ll find me in the halls of school this fall, ignoring you and skipping class.

Why I YA

I’m not a young adult. Shocking. I’m kindasortamaybe a new adult? I suppose? Although that term makes it sound like we hatch adults out of eggs, rather than the stumbling, chaotic, unavoidable slide toward adulthood that actually occurs.

But I love young adult literature.

I love reading it, I love writing it, I love being part of the YA community.

I’ve been reading young adult lit since before I was a teenager, and I’ll probably still be reading it when I’m in a nursing home. I don’t write t for a high school do-over. My high school career, although mixed and full of some truly awkward moments, made me who I am today. I don’t need to redo it.

Look at TEEN ME! I don't need to re-write that smile.

Look at TEEN ME! I don’t need to re-write that smile.

I don’t read it because I refuse to grow up. Honestly, I’m pretty good at this wine-sipping, business clothes wearing, grad-school attending adulthood thing. And I l enjoy being an adult! (Mostly. Except doing the dishes. And the taxes)

ME

ADULTING! Why would I give up fancy drink time?

I love young adult literature because it captures the core of our emotions.

Even as adults, when we’re set off kilter, freed of adulthood type rules, when we’re tipsy or tired, stressed or in love, we act…well, like teenagers.

Our teen years are when we’re a confusing, exciting, contradictory, tragic, ecstatic mess.  We laugh for hours over dumb inside jokes, and we’ll cry for days over a cruel off-handed comment. We’re not afraid of so many things because we don’t know enough to be. The future is open and bright and terrifying.

To me, YA lit captures all of that, those core moments that shape us for the rest of our lives: first kiss, first heartbreak, first hope, first failure. It’s the comet flashing neon-bright against the unchanging night-sky of adulthood.

So, tell me, why do you YA?
